Lessons 4 and 5 Science Fair Word Document Tutorial

Two 1 hour class periods

Instructional Objectives

Students will use the Internet to follow a tutorial on Microsoft Word so that they can begin preparing their science boards for the science fair. They will also learn to "bounce" between two documents using "minimize" and "maximize".

Advanced Preparation/Prerequisite Knowledge

The teacher should be familiar with the Internet and the website http://baycongroup.com/wlesson0.htm as well as Microsoft Word.

Materials

Computers with Internet access.

At least one color printer.

Science Boards (I purchased these and then sold them to the kids for $3)

Glue sticks, paste, or Elmer's School Glue.

Procedures

1. Each child will need his or her own computer to use. If you have only a few computers in your room you will have to allow only a certain amount of time per student, or you can use the computer lab.

2. Have the children open Internet Explorer or Netscape.

3. Have them type into the address bar http://websatlarge.com/puterpatter/wordart.htm

4. Have students minimize this site by clicking on the small line at the right hand side of the page on the screen.

5. Have students open Microsoft Word

6. Go to the Start Menu.

7. Go to Programs.

8. Go to Microsoft Word.

9. A new blank page should open. If it does not, have the students go to File, new, blank document.

10. Minimize this screen in the same way they minimized the web page.

11. Students will use Word Art to create the titles for their Science Board. The titles are the headings of the steps of the Scientific Method. The required ones are those on the assignment sheet. Students may have added others based on their research of the scientific method.

12. Maximize http://websatlarge.com/puterpatter/wordart.htm

13. Have students follow the steps for creating Word Art titles by first reading the info on the site then maximizing their Word Document and trying it. They will be "bouncing" between the two windows.

14. As they finish the titles have them either print out what they have created or go to "Save As" and save to disk to print out from a computer with a printer.

15. Have students glue down the project title and the "Question" word art creation, but do not have them glue down anything else until they know how much space they need for each one. The next lesson will be on typing up the information.

Assessment

All students should have completed titles by the end of the second day.

Extension

Students may complete any titles not finished in class at home. In addition, one way to help students practice using word art is to have them select key words in any assignment and use word art for those particular words. They may do this as they begin typing the information for their projects.
