History Buffet

History Buffet

How it works:

It is said that, " The way to a man's heart is through his stomach"...well, this is true for sixth graders as well! This project was created to take sixth graders through the social studies curriculum ...buffet style! We have designed "placemats" for several topics in our curriculum, including geography, writing, daily life and more. Using these placemats, we will create our own civilizations - a new placemat for each, along with a computer presentation.  As a culmination, when all the new civilizations have been created, we will have a meal, on our placemats, with the foods from each civilization studied, and we will present our computer creations to the class and invited guests.

Assessment:

Students are required to:

  •  take notes (credit /no credit)

  • create a placemat (20 point maximum)

  • assessment on each of the topics discussed (points given on a 5 point rubric for each civilization). Assessments vary.

  •  create a computer presentation (100 points)

  •  design a civilization (100 points).

  • Other, smaller lessons were sprinkled throughout the year as well....such as, comprehension questions from a literature story in the social studies book or weekly current event reviews to name a few.

What you need:

This project is ongoing throughout the year.

Keywords: Ancient,  Egyptian, Hieroglyphics

The Students: This project is appropriate for students in the 4th grade and beyond.  For 6th grade it is based on Ancient Civilizations, but it can be modified and adapted to fit any grade level and/or curricular area.

Overall Value: This project has built in motivation with a heap of educational value such as:  The students have the opportunity to read literature that interests them, illustrate ancient artifacts, written language and geographical locations, create a unique civilization, use the Internet and design a computer presentation all their own!  The culminating activity of sharing civilizations and ethnic foods with classmates and guests is the "peacock showing its feathers"....a proud display for a year of hard, but exciting work.

Tips for the Teacher:

Kelly VanAllen has been teaching fifth/ sixth grade for the past 15 years.  She has been involved with technology at her school as the systems operator, helping to maintain the workings of the school's networked computers and as the Internet facilitator, designing the school's homepage with the assistance of students.  She is currently one of Santa Barbara County's technology mentors.
