Lesson 2
Sharing The Knowledge

Instructional Objectives
The students will:

  • use telecommunications (e-mail or chat) to share their work with other students and teachers
  • practice "Netiquette", Internet manners and safety
Time Required
15-20 minutes to show the students how to use the chatroom or e-mail. Individual time or computer lab time for sharing information. Note that you need to have a time set up with another teacher's class if you are using a chatroom, unless your class is sharing with his/her own classmates through the Internet.

Advance Preparation
*Review "Netiquette" and Internet safety with your students prior to the activity.
Have a chatroom set up for the students, or E-mail service.
Have accounts for the students to use the chatroom, or E-mail.
Have "Key-pals" set up for the class. Either from a school faraway, or from your same school (the important thing is that the students learn how to use telecommunications).
Have a time schedule set up with another class if using a chatroom (or you can share within the class using the technology for practice).

TIP: If using Tapped In you can set up recorders for your students (a transcript is e-mailed to the teacher). If using e-mail you can require that they print their e-mail. This way you can keep track of their work and have a "hard copy" record of the students' sharing.

Materials/Resources Needed
Ability to send and receive e-mail, and/or ability to use a secure chatroom.

Vocabulary
Chatroom: a place in cyberspace where one can communicate with other people by typing on the computer keyboard.
E-mail: a letter or message sent through the Internet
Key-pals: a person, especially a stranger in another country (or district, school, classroom, etc.), with whom arranges a regular exchange of e-mail
Telecommunications: communication by radio, telephone, telegraph, television, computer (Internet: e-mail, chatroom, video conferencing), etc.

The vocabulary from Lesson One:
Self-portrait: a painting, drawing, etc. of oneself, done by oneself.

Procedures

  • Show the students how to use the chatroom or e-mail. Have a couple of students be the "Experts in Chatroom Use or E-mail" that can help others when help is needed.
  • Have the students share their work and ideas from Lesson One with peers by using telecommunications.

Activities

  • Share previous work and ideas with peers through the use of the Internet.
Extensions
Repeat the activity with other work.
Write about good manners and safety rules that should be followed when using the Internet to chat or send e-mail.

Homework
Write about their experience using a chatroom.

Evaluation
Was the student able to complete the task?
Did he/she use "Netiquette"? *(Tapped In can be set up so that the teacher receives a chat transcript in the form of an e-mail. I use this to make sure check for "Netiquette" and conference with the students if anything inappropriate is discovered.)
Teacher observation/discretion.
