In chapter1 Matt's father left him alone in the cabin to get his mom, sister, and the new born baby. Matt will have to survive alone in the wilderness of Maine until his family returns. Before Matt's father left, he gave Matt a rifle and a watch. The watch that his dad gave him was silver. These objects would help Matt survive in the wilderness.
