Pedestrian Safety for Students

Sample Communications

Hi
Christian V. forwarded me an email he sent to you regarding materials for your pedestrian safety unit. Listed below are some additional resources I refer people to when they are looking for educational materials. In addition to pedestrian resources, there are also references to bike resources may also be useful, so I thought I would share them also.

This website may provide some contacts and resources:
http://safety.fhwa.dot.gov/community/ped_bike.htm .

Another is the Bicycle Safety Education Resource Center which can be accessed at this address:
http://bicyclinginfo.org/ee/fhwa.html .

Other resources for materials include: The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). at 202-366-4077. You also might order materials from the NHTSA on-line catalog which can be accessed at
http://nhtsa.dot.gov .

Your state or local Pedestrian and Bicycle Coordinator may also have materials or could recommend some things for you. The website for that
information is:
http://walkinginfo.org/insight/links_cord/cord_index.cfm

The American Automobile Association (AAA) may also have materials you would be interested in, and you can order from them at
http://aaafoundation.org .

You may also find some helpful information at a couple of our Pedestrian Bicycle Information Center web sites by going to the following web address:
http://pedbikeinfo.org . The four sites you may access they are: walkinginfo.org; bicyclinginfo.org ; International Walk toSchool Day, and Walk to School Day USA. Click on any of the four boxes there to get to one of those websites.

Another website you might find useful for information pertaining to bicycling activities for kids is
http://earthforce.org/ . They list several activities at their site.

Child Safety Solutions recently sent me some materials which are both in English and Spanish. The toll free number is: 877-669-7233 Ext 203.

Another possibility might be to contact the National Safe Kids Campaign. Their web address is:
http://safekids.org/index.cfm .

Should you have a need for videos, both the AAA and NHTSA sites have videos available for viewing on-line, or I have a list I could send to
you. We also have a Bicycle Safety Resource Guide CD we could send to you if interested.

Hope these recommendations help. Good luck with your science project.
Let us know if you need anything else.

Hi Ms. Williams,
I am S. J. RN, MPH, Deputy Director of Injury Free at Columbia and
I received your request about pedestrian safety. We do have info
available in the office but I would like to recommend you contact Safety
City. It is a pedestrian safety program sponsored by the DOT and they
have a site in Washington Heights and in Harlem. The contact for
Washington Heights is 212-795-3036 and in Harlem the
contact is 212-368-7653. The program focuses on pedestrian,
bicycle and motor vehicle occupancy safety beginning at the 3rd grade
level. I hope this info helps. Please contact me if you would like to
receive info available in the office or if I can be of any assistance to
you. Hope to hear from you.
