Close Encounters of the Third Kind was inspired by early morning meteor-gazing
with his father.
As a young boy, Steven
made homemade movies. He was 11 when he used his dad's 8-millimeter Bell
& Howell wind-up camera to shoot short movies about flying saucers
and World War II battles. Before long, the entire family was selling tickets
and making lemonade for living-room showings.
Some of the movies he has directed
are: Saving Private Ryan, Shindler's List, Back to the Future and Who Framed
Roger Rabbit?
Spielberg also has created a
business empire that includes video games, toys, and restaurants.
Spielberg has seven children,
aged 18 months to 21 years, who live with him: three from his marriage
to Kate Capshaw, one each from previous marriages, and two he and Capshaw
have adopted, both of whom are African American. Spielberg makes TV cartoons,
he says, ''because my kids think I'm cool when I do it."
Spielberg is a philanthropist.
He spent $85 million to support Jewish culture and education. As chairman
of the Starbright Foundation, which provides online links to children's
wards in hospitals, Spielberg has helped to raise $40 million. He often
visits hospitals, helping sick children explore new media.
Steven Spielberg is a hero because he has created
