1. Place this story map on chalkboard-

Setting- Mexico , 1876.

Problem- How will the family arrive safely in Ensenada in Baja, California?
Events-
1- General Diaz transfers Judge Trevino to a court in Baja California.
2- The entire Trevino family must leave their home in Mexico and travel
to this new location.
3- The family meets bandidos on the road.
Predicted Outcome-- The family will have many mishaps, but they will finally arrive at Ensenada.
2. Direct students to look at
the illustrations on the cover and the illustrations inside the novel.
a. By looking
at the plant life on the cover, what can you tell about the climate and
location of the setting of this novel?
b. By looking
at the cover, describe the main character, El Guero.
c. Why do
you think the illustration within the book are in black and white?
3. Analyze the prologue and
historical note.

difficult during this time period?

the year 1876 located at the beginning of the novel.
5. Have students predict events
and outcomes.

1. In cooperative learning groups
students will read chapters 1-3.
2. Reader and recorder will
answer focus questions on story maps.

3. On character web, writers
will analyze two characters.
