FADING FUNDS OR WHERE DOES MY MONEY GO?

 

TEACHER NOTES:

¨     OBJECTIVES:

Ø     Students will apply real-life skills, such as keeping a budget, while engaged in the School Clothes Budget Online Activity.

Ø     Students will create tables and graphs in Excel to display data.

Ø     Students will analyze, make conclusions and make recommendations that are based statistics.

Ø     Students will participate in class discussions.

 

¨     DURATION: 2 Class Sessions

 

¨     TECHNOLOGY: Computers, Internet Access

 

¨     SOFTWARE/PROGRAM: MS Excel

 

¨     TEACHER’S ROLE: The teacher is both an instructor, when teaching a specific program (Excel), and a facilitator, who provides guidance to groups and individual students, who are completing the School Clothes Budget Online Activity.

 

¨     DIRECT INSTRUCTION: Mini-lesson on Excel.

 

¨     CLASS ACTIVITY:

Ø     Discuss the importance of keeping a budget and the importance of keeping within a set limit.

 

Ø     Have the students complete School Clothes Budget Online Activity, which lasts about 2 periods (45 – 60 minutes), at http://score.kings.k12.ca.us/lessons/shoppinglist.html. The Teacher Page provides clear instructions and information. Additionally, the activity  “gives students an opportunity to use math in a practical life application” (http://score.kings.k12.ca.us/lessons/shoppinglist.html).

After all students have finished the activity, a class discussion will ensue.

 

¨     HOMEWORK:

Ø     Have students track their individual expenses for a week. In Excel, students will create a table with the headings for day, date, amount of expenditure, and item or service purchased. On the eighth day or the next school day, hold a class discussion on their findings and analysis.

Ø     In Excel, students will create circle/pie graphs and analyze how they spent their money.

·        What percentage did each spend on snacks, clothing, beauty or school supplies, transportation, gifts, or entertainment (movies, CDs, …)?

·        Were all the purchases necessary?

·        Were any purchases frivolous (unnecessary)?

·        Were any purchases discounted or on sale?

·        Are they satisfied with their purchases?

·        Were there any unusual expenses/events that week?
