Activities

Use background knowledge about fire, its use and its dangers. Generate a discussion about fire escape. Ask students if they know what a home fire escape plan is.  Be sure to stress the importance of planning for two ways out in case one means of egress is blocked by fire.  Ask reflective questions: "why is a home fire escape plan important to have?"

Review the rooms in the home fire escape worksheet and complete worksheet as a class.

 

Activities (cont.)

Brainstorm about what procedures one should follow when a fire occurs.

Review the sound of a fire alarm or buzzer - which indicates the necessary evacuation of any building.

Students will share and discuss the floor plans of their homes marked with two escape routes.

Teacher observation, student participation and completion of writing assignments.

 

Extension

Practice a classroom fire escape drill

Walk around the school and identify EXIT signs.  Turn off the lights in order for students see the EXIT signs lighted up.
