Materials "In case of fire you should....."

Activities Prior to the visit to the fire station discuss with the students that firefighters are called community helpers because they protect our homes from fire. If possible show pictures of the various items firemen use as part of their equipment. Discuss the items and their purpose. (helmet, face mask and air bottle, ladder, fire hose and nozzle, fire axe, fire bunker pants and boots, fire bunker special coat, fire hydrant.

Activities (cont.) Once at the fire station ask the firemen to help students understand how these items are used to help fight fires. Discuss what it takes to lead people out of a burning building. Fireman develop loyalty, trust, and grace under pressure. They are willing to risk their lives to save others. After the visit the students will engage in two classroom activities Math - Students will practice finding ordinal numbers (1-9) by circling the ordinal number within "Five Little Firefighter" poem. Writing - Students will complete a writing journal about the visit.

Extension Art - Make 911 signs to hang beside the telephone. Have children glue beans or macaroni on them to recognize the emergency number |
