Lesson Two
Overview: Drawing creates a bridge between the ideas in a student's head and the blank piece of paper provided by the teacher when creating stories. Getting children to use their imagination can sometimes be difficult. In this lesson students use factual information gathered from the internet as the basis for creating a nonfiction story of their own. This personal story will be told only through illustrations.
Duration: Two to Three class periods
Objectives:
Students will use the internet to gather information about a specific topic.
Students will use a KWL Chart to activate prior knowledge and inquiry.
Students will express story elements through illustrations.
Students will apply strategies learned in oral and reading expressions to drawings.
Students will share their picture stories with classmates.
Materials:

Activities:
After reading the book The Spider and discussing the story elements, use the KWL chart to determine what the students already know about spiders. Record their responses in the K column of the chart. In the W column record what students want to learn about spiders. The L column will be used to record new information that the students learn after reading and visiting the websites.
Have students visit the websites provided, depending on your students ability the information may have to be read aloud by you. Explain/Model how to create a fictional story based on factual information obtained from the spiders websites.
After each child has verbalized a story, distribute the Story Elements Handout. This handout provides a space for students to draw a picture of their fictional story. Instructs students to draw pictures that capture the story they verbalized to the class. After pictures are drawn, students can share their drawings.
