Very Good Facts About Very Good Books

 

    Lesson One

 Overview:  Students will begin to differentiate between fiction and non-fiction/facts  as general genres.  Students will first discuss various parts of the book A Butterfly Alphabet Book by Jerry Pallota and then discuss parts of the story I Wish I Were A Butterfly by James Howe.

Duration:   One class period

Objectives:

Students will communicate reading, listening, and viewing experiences.

Students will demonstrate sense of story (beginning, middle, end, characters and details)

Students will process information and distinguish between fiction and non-fiction stories.

Students will discuss concepts and information in a text to clarify and extend knowledge.

Materials:

Books A Butterfly Alphabet Book by Jerry Pallota  and I Wish I Were A Butterfly by James Howe.

Unit Resources,  Chart paper, markers  (used by teacher as graphic organizer)

Activities:

Help students identify differences between books which are for entertainment and those for learning information.  Read aloud A Butterfly Alphabet Book and discuss the facts listed about butterflies.  Then, read aloud I Wish I Were A Butterfly and discuss what is real and what is imaginary in the story. 

Discuss the likenesses and the differences in the books.  Develop a graphic organizer to demonstrate these comparisons.

Assessment:  Based on teacher observation and question/response from students.

Home Learning:  Students write one fiction and one non-fiction sentence about the two books read.
