    Lesson Four

Overview: Students are read aloud two different versions of Cinderella. The students will identify specific story elements.  Students are exposed to the story characters, plot, and setting.  Next the students will compare and contrast the story elements in each of the two versions of Cinderella while simultaneously recognizing cultural diversity in literature.

Duration:  Two class periods

Objectives:

Students will identify literary elements across stories, including plots, settings, and characters; and distinguish the conflict and its resolution.

Students will describe character traits, roles, similarities within the literacy selection.

Students will make relevant connections/relationships between the two books

Students will complete a story map comparing/contrasting both stories

Materials:    Books Cinderella (any English version) and Yeh-Shen, A Cinderella Story by Ai-Ling Louie.  Unit Resources,    Venn Diagram    Story Elements .

Activities: 

Read each story aloud to the class.  Create a class chart comparing and contrasting events.

Distribute the Venn Diagram Worksheet and help students complete.  If students are in the primary grades the teacher can complete the diagram on the board and have students contribute answers as you write them down for all to see.

Students visit web site to complete the Story Elements interactive worksheet.

Assessment:

Teacher observation, verbal interpretation, question and answer session. Completion of Story Elements on line as well as the Venn Diagram Worksheet.

Home Learning:

Students select one of the two stories read and re-write and illustrate, creating a Cinderella story of their very own.
