 600 A D - The first certified cocoa plantation in history is set up by the Mayas in Yucatan.

1502 - Christopher Columbus brings the first cocoa beans to Europe as a present for Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain. The beans are ignored.

1519 - Montezuma, ruler of the Aztecs, offers a cold cocoa drink to the Spanish conqueror Hernando Cortez.

1606 - Antonio Carletti brings cocoa back to Europe, thus terminating the chocolate monopoly of the Spaniards.

1615 - Maria Theresia of Spain presents chocolate to Louis XIV of France as a present for his engagement.

1631 - Colmenero publishes his expose A strange report on the characteristics and quality of chocolate.

1657 - First recorded sale of chocolate in England.

1674 - Chocolate in solid form made known in Spain.

1747 - Friedrich the Great of Prussia prohibits the peddling of chocolate.

1770 - First advertisements for chocolate in
America appear in the Boston Gazette and the Country Journal.

1795 - Dr. Joseph Fry from Bristol
, England, invents a steam-driven engine which allows to grind cocoa beans in a much faster way.

1828 - C.J. Van Houten invents a cocoa press which makes it possible to lower prices and, hence, allowing mass production of chocolate.
