Pronouns

 

Objective:  Learn to identify and use pronouns.

Materials:  Mine, All Mine  by Ruth Heller, computers with Internet access. 

Book Overview:  "Bold, handsome illustrations accompanied by a jaunty, rhymed text demonstrate the importance of pronouns with panache." --The Horn Book

Introduction:  Review with students what nouns and proper nouns are.  Show a sentence like "Mike said Mike walked Mike's dogs today."  Ask students what is wrong with that sentence.  How could it be written better?  Introduce that these words are pronouns.  Read Mine, All Mine by Ruth Heller.  After discussing, have student pairs complete Pronoun Brainstorm Worksheet.  

Web Activities:  Students go to What are Pronouns?  and Nouns and Pronouns Sites.  If there is extra time, students can go to Parts of Speech Games

Assessment:  Have students complete What is a Pronoun?.
Home Learning:  Students will complete Pronoun Word Search.  

Extension Activity: Read I and You and Don't Forget Who: What Is a Pronoun? by Brian P. Cleary.  Try to come up with a poem about pronouns.
