Lesson 1 - Arthur Meets the President
Objectives:
Students will be able to:
* know important facts about Washington, D.C.
* locate where the White House is
* state what facts they know about the president
* write three things they know and three things they want to know about Washington, D.C.
* write about their favorite part of Arthur Meets The President
* complete a pre-test with 85% accuracy

* Arthur Meets the President by Marc Brown
* Washington, D.C. Guide for Kids by Carol Bluestone and Susan Irwin
Paper to make their list
Markers
Activities:
1. Students can begin and maintain a computer-generated log or journal on Washington, D.C. that can be saved to the hard drive and student disk.
2. Ask the class how many of them are familiar with Washington, D.C. and the President of the United States.
3. Read the story: Arthur Meets The President and discuss it with the students.
4. Students will work in cooperative groups and discuss/brainstorm all the facts that they know about the President and Washington, D.C. and list of at least six facts on a paper.
5. Students will share their list with the class and write all of the facts given about the President and Washington, D.C. on the chalkboard.
6. Students will be given a 5 question pre-test on the President and Washington, D.C.
7. Students will do a daily log (worksheet) on information they find on Washington, D.C..
8. Students will write their favorite part of the story for Arthur Meets The President and illustrate it.
9. Students will do their own K-W-L chart (write three things they know and three things they want to learn).
Evaluation:
Students will complete their own K-W-L chart.
Students will complete their daily log.
Students will complete pre-test quiz on weather.
Home Learning:
Students will go online to Google, Fact Monster, Ask Jeeves and Yahooligans to research additional information on Washington, D.C.
Students will go online to do a comprehension activity, print out the worksheet and complete it.
