My Country and Flag

Objectives

Students will: 

  • Uses maps, globes, charts and graphs to interpret data
  • Locates and describes physical and cultural features of major political regions.
  • Understands factors such as population.

Procedure

1.  Ask students the following questions:

  • Would you able to tell another person from another country their location on earth? 
  • Would you be able to find other countries in a map? 
  • How many countries are their in the world today?
  • Would they be able to tell another student from another country about their customs and beliefs?

2. Review key vocabulary with students.

3. The teacher will show a map of the world and review continents and oceans with students.  (Harcourt Brace Social Studies pages 42-45 is a good review.)

4.  Point on the map to where you live. 

5. Give students the Bon Voyage handout and the Country Table handout and explain their assignment.

  • Students will be searching the net for their cultural  countries.  They will create a slide show on their parental country (ies).

  • Social Studies book or atlas
  • Internet
  • Books on different countries
  • Ruler
  • White Paper
  • Crayons or paint
  • Slide show software like HyperStudio or PowerPoint

Remind students that all work will be displayed at the Family Heritage Day.

Homework

With your parents permission look through photos of their countries so you can see what their country is like. Ask your parents to tell you about their country. Write a paragraph sharing what the country is like according to your parents.

Extension

1. Discuss the symbol of a flag.

2.  Give students Create Flag handout.

3. Students will research about what is a flag, copy their parental country's flags and create their own flag.

4. The student will write a paragraph to explain what their flag represents.

Fieldtrip or Other Activity

  • Invite different consulates of various countries to visit the classroom and speak to the class.
  • Invite a travel agent to visit the class and bring different brochures on different countries.
