A Strange Fish

Objectives

The students identify strange facts about sea horses.

Time Required

2- 45 minute periods

Vocabulary

Swim bladder: air bladder
Dorsal fin: of, on or near the back
Strange: peculiar, not usual

Materials

Computer with an Internet connection
Paper, pencils, crayons
Strange Facts sheet

Procedure

  1. The teacher will review the information the students have learned about sea horses.
    Next the students will be asked to get the facts from this information.
  2. The students can research sea horse facts at several Internet sites.
    The teacher should bookmark these sites in advance for the students to explore.
  3. Some good sites are:
    Yahooligans- Fishes this is a great search engine for students and has great information about Lined sea horses.
    Australian Museum Student Stuff- Fish in Focus is a great site to learn about the unusual facts.
    SeaScope is good for information about raising sea horses in captivity.
  4. The students write the facts they researched on the Sea Horse Strange Facts page.

Evaluation

The teacher will evaluate the Sea Horse Fact Sheet and will review the K-W-L chart for any additional information the students have added.

Home Learning

The students will compose a poem to show what is unusual about the sea horse.

Extension Activity

The students can publish their poems at Kid Authors
