Introduction to Sea Horses


Objectives

Students identify various sea horses.
Students complete a K-W-L chart.

Time Required

2- 45 minute periods

Vocabulary Words

sea horse: small fish with a head like a horse
plankton: tiny plants and animals that fish eat
vertebrate: having a backbone

Materials

K-W-L chart
Computer with Internet access
Paper and pencil
Sea horses or pictures of sea horses
Literature Book- Sea Horses A True Book by Elaine Landau. Children's Press. 1999. (or similar children's book may be substituted)

 Procedure

  1. Begin a K-W-L (What I know about Sea horses..., What I Want to Know About Sea horses...,What I Have Learned About Sea horses...).
  2. Hold up a large photo or poster of sea hoarse and have students describe it. 
  3. List on blackboard what students know about sea horses and what they want to know.
  4. The teacher then reads the book Sea Horses A True Book aloud to the class as an introduction. This book will transport the student to the undersea world of the sea horse. It provides information about their life, protection, reproduction and how to care for one in the classroom.
  5. Students can learn more about sea horses by visiting the Docslaw Seaworld web site.

Evaluation

Teacher will evaluate students' answers to questions on the K-W-L chart.

Extension

The students can make their own sea horses with construction paper. Check this site for other art activities: Enchanted Learning/Arts and Crafts

  Home Learning

The students will write a paragraph about sea horses and these will be used to compile a class book.
