Dwellings of the Plantation
Duration:
· Two one hour sessions
Objectives:
· The student will distinguish and make comparisons between colonial homes
and modern homes.
· The students will use technology resources to find information.
Materials:
· "If You Lived In Colonial Times" by Ann McGovern ISBN 059045160X
· Venn Diagram Worksheet / Venn Diagram Rubric
· Internet
· Dwelling · Subterranean · Bastion · Refrigeration
Activities:
· In this activity the students will discover about the early Americans by looking at a recreation of Plymoth Plantation in 1627.
· Before the activity read If You Lived in Colonial Times y Ann McGovern.
· Brainstorm all of the things you know about early Americans settlers and life in the Plymoth Plantation and complete KWL Chart.
· Take a Virtual Tour of Plymoth Plantation please find various types of homes (dwellings ) and read about them and record on the
Types of Dwelling student worksheet. Dwelling # 1 Dwelling # 2 Dwelling # 3 Dwelling # 4
· Complete Venn Diagram to compare and contrast a colonial home to a modern home.
Assessment:
· Student will present the KWL chart completed.
· Student will locate and respond to the Types of Dwelling research worksheet.
· A Venn Diagram Rubric will be used to assess their compare/contrast capabilities.
Home Learning:
· Visit the Colonial Williamsburg website
· Visit the Scholastics Colonial Period web site to create the interior of your own home.
Extension:
· Students will print and complete "Colonial America Word Search Worksheet" from internet site.
· Visit Perspectives of Liberty web site to read and learn more about life in Colonial times.
