I Am An Apple by Jean Mazollo. In this book Marzollo details the life of an apple from bud to flower to fruit to market to table. The story unfolds in simple sentences in large, easy-to-read type. The focus is on the apple and its growing cycle. The illustrator creates a 3-D effect that makes the pictures seem to lift off the page.
Make pictures ahead of time of the life cycle of the apple (i.e., apple, seed, bud, flower, etc.)
Copy of song "Round the Apple Tree" on chart paper
Word Processor
Procedures:
Read story I Am An Apple by Jean Mazollo and discuss the life cycle of an apple.
Sing song "Round the Apple Tree"
Place the pictures on the board in random order. Choose different students to come up and place the pictures in correct order from the seed to the apple.
Students will work in pairs and use KidPix to create a slide show of the stages on an apple, from the seeds being planted to the apples being picked. Write the stages of an apple with a small illustration on the board out of order and have students place them in order in their KidPix slide show. You can either have them type the sentences and draw the illustrations using crayons and markers or type the sentences and illustrate using KidPix. Make sure students make a cover sheet title "From Seeds to Apples" and their names as authors and illustrators. Once they have completed have partners share their slide show with the class. Then print the pages cut them in an apple shape and staple together.
