DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT:

For Your Eyes Only is a cooperative project where students will collaborate in teams of five for the purpose of researching information about the human eye. Their results will be presented to the class using a multimedia program. While students work together as a team they will enhance their decision-making and critical thinking skills. Students will begin this four-week project by choosing their roles such as: researchers, graphic designer, presenter, word processor, etc. Specific websites such as: Anatomy of the Eye, How The Eye Works, Eye Safety for Children, Walter Wick Reaches Deep Into His Bag of (Optical) Tricks, and others will be given to the groups to begin their research to find information for their project. The Functional Human Eye Model, an apparatus used for demonstrating normal and diseased eye function, will be introduced. Home learning assignments will focus on fun activities such as: surveying the number of family members , friends and neighbors who wear glasses. A graph will depict the data, which will then be compared with the rest of the class for discussion.

Students will use concept and idea maps to create and organize their information. Additionally, online interactive websites dealing with vision will be used for learning. Students will also be trained to use PowerPoint, a multimedia presentation program. A field trip to the Lighthouse for the Blind will take place two weeks after the initiation of the project in order to learn how Braille is used with the blind. Virtual field trips to the Tech Museum of Innovation will include the website How the Eye Uses Light.

A hands-on activity will be the creation of eyeglasses using construction paper and plastic transparencies. This will allow students to explore the job of an optician.  A local ophthalmologist and optician will be invited as guest speakers who will contribute to the effectiveness of the unit. Peer assessment using a teacher-made rubric will be used as the evaluation tool. The class will evaluate each group.
