Butterflies

Objectives:  The students will be introduced to and learn the butterfly life cycle.  They will completion of PowerPoint Presentation that includes and properly labels all stages of the butterfly life cycle. 

Materials:  Computer with Internet access and Microsoft PowerPoint, LCD projector,  Internet activity, and KWL chart sample. 

Procedures: 

The teacher will begin by having students recall different animal classifications.  She will access prior knowledge in regards to butterflies.  Students will be asked to contribute to KWL chart on board:  What do we know about the butterfly life cycle?  What do we want to learn about the butterfly life cycle?  Teacher will introduce butterflies by doing the Internet Activity with students.  She will provide visual aids obtained from Exploring Butterflies or any of the sites listed on Links and Resources page.  Read Where Butterflies Grow by Joanne Ryder.  A discussion will be lead about what we have learned.  Students will then complete the learned part of the KWL chart.   

Web Activities:   Have students go to computers and complete Butterfly Activity.  See answer key.

Assessment:  Use Butterfly Activity.  See answer key.


Home Learning:
Complete activity.    

Extension Activity:  Obtain mail order caterpillars.  Students can observe the life cycle of butterfly and have a culmination activity to release the butterflies.  Also, lesson can be expanded to a more in depth study.  Once life cycle is learned, move on to study stages individually.  For example, study the egg stage, then the egg anatomy, and so forth.
