Lesson Five

Objective:  The students after a lecture and discussion on adding and subtracting money, will be able to figure out how much money they will spend and how much change they should get, with 80% accuracy. 

Vocabulary: bill, coin, equivalent set, penny, nickel, dime, quarter, half dollar (penny = $0.01 or one cent; nickel = $0.05 or five cents; dime = $0.10 or ten cents; quarter = $0.25 or twenty-five cents; half dollar = $0.50 or fifty cents) 

Materials:      

          * Manipulative (play money)

           * Worksheet

           * Internet         

Activities: 

1.  Review vocabulary and the value of each coin.

2.  To start off the lesson the teacher will ask the students, "How many of you like hamburgers, hot dogs, French fries, and coke?"  After the students respond, the teacher will tell them to pretend that they are going to buy these foods in class today as she writes the following snack menu on the board:

Hamburger - $2.30            Hot Dog - $1.95

French Fries - $1.0.5         Soft Drink - $.55

3.  When the teacher finishes writing the snack menu on the board, she will ask the students the following questions:  How much would it cost to have a hot dog and fries for lunch?  How about a soft drink and a hamburger?  How much change would you get if you paid for your hamburger and soft drink with $3.00?  How did you find the answers?"

4.  Students will be called on at random to read the information on the board and the teacher will explain the different steps that students must follow when adding and subtracting money. 

       Adding Money

Step 1 - Add money amounts the same as other amounts.  Write the problem.

Step 2 - Add to find the sum.

Step 3 - Write the sum in dollars and cents.

        Subtracting Money

Step 1 - Subtract money amounts the same as other numbers.  Write the problem.

Step 2 - Subtract to find the difference.

Step 3 - Write the difference in dollars and cents.

5.  As the student volunteers are up on the board working out the problems, the other students will remain in their seats and do the problems.

6.  After having introduced the concept of adding and subtracting money, the teacher will instruct the students to complete a worksheet.  As students are working, the teacher will be walking around answering any questions that the students might have.

Web Activities:

1.  Students will go to the Adding Money Amounts website and the Subtracting Money Amounts.  Here they will read information and be given an opportunity to practice with interactive games.

2.  Students will go online and create their own worksheets on adding and subtracting money and complete it.

Evaluation:  Worksheet (Students will complete the worksheet with 80% accuracy)

Home Learning:  Students will complete a worksheet and make-up 5 addition &  5 subtraction problems about money.  They will have someone in their family workout the problems and sign the paper.
