Procedure:
Have the children work in small groups.
They will decide among themselves what type of business they are.
They will measure the floor space and draw in the furniture/counters.
On a computer, the students will draw a floor grid (see directions below).
Each square of the grid represents on square foot.
Using different colors, place the furniture on the grid (don’t forget
doorways and windows. Edit.

1. Click Start, go to Programs, and Microsoft Word
2. Select
Table, then Insert
3. Select Table

Choose the
number of columns (27) and the number of rows (32)
5. Either
print the grid or work on it in the open program
Evaluation: Each
student will have a printed blank grid and a worksheet that contains
various pieces of
labeled office furniture, store shelves, etc. with the given
measurements. They are to solve problems relating to the store. Ex: Will the
desk and the toy display case fit on the left wall? Why or why not?
Depending on the “business” selected, the questions will vary.
Homework: Construct a
grid and using one inch to a foot, recreate your room, adding
furniture, windows, etc. or cut little furniture from construction paper.
Extensions: Make a miniature version of the business using heavy cardboard and
miniatures.
Go online and find a virtual store to compare with the one completed in
the classroom.
Visit a toy store.
Make a gift certificate on the computer for the store.
Create a contest for the store or business.
Invent a new toy.
