Identifying My Spider

Objectives

The students will complete research and identify the spider they have been observing at home.
The student will write a report about the spider using their research.

Time Period

2- 45 minute periods

Materials

Observation Logs
Computer with Internet connection
Paper, pencil, crayons
Children’s book Spiders and Scorpions

Procedure

1. The teacher will discuss with the students the data they have collected about their spider. 
2. The students will compare how their spiders are the same and if there are any differences. Next 
    the teacher will share the children’s book Spiders and Scorpions. This book shares information 
    on 10 different spiders.  
3.
Then the students will be asked to identify their spider with the information they have. 
4. The teacher can bookmark several Internet sites to help in this quest. A few good ones for 
    students are:
   
Encylopedia.com students just type in a word and hit the search button for data
   
Enchanted Learning students click on "Biomes" to learn where different animals live
   
Scholastic rich site with online activities, such as animorphs, word of the week, kid news and book beat
   
Spy da Web excellent photos of spiders
5. The students will then determine the type of spider they have been observing, tell the spiders 
    name, the type of web, its location and three facts about this spider in addition to what they have 
    observed already. The students will include a drawing of their spider with this information. They will 
    complete a Spider Data Sheet.

Evaluation

Students will be evaluated on the information contained in their Spider Data Sheets.

Home Learning

The students will review the data they collected at school about their spiders and organize the data in table form.

Extension Activity

The students will vote on which web site they liked the best and explain why. After all data has been collected, students will create a chart of favorite web sites using a spreadsheet application.
