Alliteration Fun with Spiders

Objectives

The students will write alliterations using vocabulary words.
The students will use technology to enhance learning.

Time Period

1- 45 minute period

Materials

Computer with word processor and Internet connection
Paper, pencil, crayons
Vocabulary list that was developed from previous lessons
Word processing program
Observation Log

Procedures

1. The teacher will demonstrate what an alliteration (Tongue Twister) is. An example is “Slippery spiders
slid sideways singing songs.” Just remember all of the words have to start with the same letter as the
first word. Have the students give some examples using their first name.
2. Have the students work in small groups to help get ideas. Next have each student write their own
alliteration using the information they have learned about spiders.
3. Let the students type their alliteration in a word processing program such as KidPro, AppleWorks,
    Works or Word
and then illustrate the alliteration.
4. Have students visit Children's Stomping Ground or similar site to read tongue twisters and to post their
    own.
5. Students will make entries into their Observation Logs.

Evaluation

The teacher will assess each alliteration based on the spider information used and the following of the alliteration rules- a tongue twister in which all the words begin with the same letter.

Home Learning

The students will develop an alliteration about the spider they have been observing at home. If students have no spider at home to observe, they can write about one they have seen in a movie, television program, or video. Students can also visit Yahooligans/Insects to view pictures of spiders.

Extension Activity

Students will visit various spider websites, such as Desert USA , Insects.org, Kids Health/Brown Spider  to collect information on various spiders. They will then complete a Spider Fact Sheet on each kind.
