PROCEDURES & ACTIVITIES

1. Review what is a budget. 

2. Set this scenario for the students: I want you to visualize a thing that you have been wanting for a long time.  Every time you go to the store you look at it, you see yourself with it.  You dream with it, but it is very expensive.  So you decide you will save money to purchase it.  As a smart consumer what should you do?

3. Discuss with the students what idioms are.  An idiom is an expression using words that  don't have a literal meaning.  Tell the student that in this lesson they will learn how to stretch the dollar or how to get more for your money.

4. Hand the students a worksheet table in which they will list 5 items they want to purchase.

5.  The students will visit   www.ebay.com     www.walmart.com     www.shopping.com  

 Then write in the table what each item cost at each location.

6.  When the table is complete they will use the table to do a bar graph which shows a comparison of prices.  This is where the vocabulary words competitive prices comes in handy

OPTIONAL:   The student will  present the graph to the class using a slide presentation

7.  The student will analyze the graph and write a paragraph to tell how they have learned to save money shopping.

 

HOME LEARNING

Give the student a list of idioms and have the student research to see what each one means.

EXTENSION 


Make a list of items picked by the class. Each student will try to find the cheapest place to buy the items.
