Banks Help Money Grow  

OBJECTIVE

The student recognizes and applies compare and contrast text.

Get checks from a bank to give to students to learn about bank accounts.  , if not you can have them create their own.

Interest, barter Electronic Funds Transfer, Automatic  Teller Machine (ATM), checks, signature, endorsement, bouncing a check, account, on-line banking, denomination 

PROCEDURES & ACTIVITIES

1. Discuss the story A Chair For My Mother read in the previous lesson. 

    a.  What did the characters do to save money?

    b.  Why do you think they chose a bottle to save their coins? 

    c.  What things could have happened to the money being kept in the bottle? 

    d.  What could they have done to protect their money and make their money grow or  make more money?  

2. Ask students if they have ever heard the expression "Money Doesn't Grow on Trees".  Explain to the students that banks can make money grow and help us protect our money. 

3.  Tell the students they are going to visit a kids bank on the web. They will meet different characters such as Interest Ray, Dollar Bill and Mr. Eft who will explain how a bank works. 

4.  Students  will visit the following sites:  mmforkids  and  kidsbank .

They will answer questions on this site.  They can check what they learned with the online quiz at the kidsbank site.

5. Students will take notes on websites and copy the vocabulary from the websites.

6.  When students finish their trip to the bank online place the students in groups of four.  Each group will create a table to play Jeopardy against another group.  This way they will review what they have learned and check each others answers.

7.  Refer back to the story of A Chair for my mother.  After learning about banks the students will write a comparison paragraph explaining why it may be better to save money in a bank versus a jar.   

HOME LEARNING

The students will use the website of Kidsbank   to create a check and label all it's parts.

Completed  handout on questions on site.
