OBJECTIVE


The student will identify different coins and their value, also all the uses of money.

PROCEDURES & ACTIVITIES

1.  The teacher will build prior knowledge. Ask questions such as:

How many different coins do we use for money? 

What is the value of each coin?

Where are coins made?  In a government factory called a mint. There are 4 in the U.S. 

What does mint mean? To make a coin out of metal.

What material are coins made of?  Pennies are made of copper and zinc, the others are made with copper and nickel.

Do you know who's face is on each coin?  Penny-Lincoln, Nickel-Jefferson, Dime-Franklin D. Roosevelt, Quarters-George Washington, Half Dollars-John F. Kennedy.

Why Do we need money?  Accept several responses.

     ACTIVITIES

2.  The teacher will read a story to the class, but before you read, handout a worksheet that has a blank table which the students will fill in as they hear the story.  (Listening Skills)

3.  Read Follow The Money by Loreen Leedy

4.  Review how the coin was used throughout the story and check table filled.

5.  Introduce the unit that students will be working on.  Tell students that they will learn:

      a.   What is a budget and how to do a budget. 

      b.  How banks work and how they can open a bank account.

      c.   How to earn, save, and spend money in a responsible way.  

      d.  Practice counting money, and solve money problems . Also balancing a 

          checkbook using their math skills.

6.  To learn more about coins the students will visit:

      www.usmint.gov/kids 

      a.  The student will answer a question handout using this site.     question handout

      b.  At this site the student will create their own coin and print it.

7.  The student will be given a handout to label the value of each coin.    coin handout

    

HOME LEARNING

The student will use coins at home to make a chart showing the value, the legend, mint date, text, decorations on the fields and image of each coin.
