Objectives:
Students will define "tree."
Students will identify and define
various types of trees.
Students will complete a KWL
chart.
Materials:
Children's Book: Lyon, George. ABCedar
An Alphabet of Trees. New York: Orchard Books, 1989 (a similar children's book
about trees may be substituted)
KWL Chart
Computer with Internet
Vocabulary:
Tree- a woody plant with one main stem or trunk which develops many branches, usually at some height above the ground; most trees are over ten feet tall and over six inches in diameter
Procedures:
1. Read aloud
ABCedar An Alphabet of Trees by George Lyon to introduce
the unit. Define what a tree is: a large, woody
perennial plant with one main
trunk and many branches. Draw an illustration of a tree
and label parts.
2. Handout KWL Chart.

We Know About Trees
K: Students will brainstorm what they think they know about trees and
record each on their chart.
What
We Want To Find Out About Trees
W: Students will brainstorm several questions about trees they would like answered and record each on their chart.
What
We've Learned About Trees
L:
Students will record the answers to questions and new facts learned at the
end of the lesson.
3. Create a Tree Word Scramble for
students to unscramble. Teacher can create a template or go online to Discovery

Assessment:
Teachers will evaluate
students' answers to questions on the KWL chart.
Home Learning:
Students will find pictures about trees and create their own tree alphabet using a word processor.
Extension Activity:
Students will brainstorm the names of trees they
know, such as: oak, pine, palm, coconut, maple, willow, fig...They will visit The
Tree Guide, they will type in the name of a tree, click on search, click on
specific name, and report on the following topics:
Common Name
Botanical Name
Range
Modern Uses
Traditional Uses
Ecology
Each of these topics can be made into a slide and made part of a multimedia
presentation using KidPix, HyperStudio, PowerPoint...
