Duration:
One-hour session
Objective:
Students will
research on the Internet to find out how we use trees.
Materials:
Computer with
Internet
Magazines, scissors,
glue, construction paper
Vocabulary:
Natural resource- something we use that comes from Earth.
Procedures:
1. Discuss natural
resources and explain that trees are one of our natural resources. Student will
visit
2. Assign students
to research on computers ways in which we use trees.
3. Students will
make a list of ways that we use trees.
4. Once students
have identified ways that trees are used they should use
magazines to find pictures which depict uses of trees.
5. The pictures will
be glued together to make a collage of the uses of trees.
6. Visit The Wonderful
World of Trees and click on Man's Uses for Trees.
List the uses and explain each one:
Assessment:
Teachers will evaluate
students' collages using a rubric. Teachers can create their own
rubrics by visiting this site: Rubistar
Home Learning:
Students will look around
their homes and make lists of things that are made from trees.
Students should
share their ideas with each other. Then the teacher can discuss how we can
renew this natural resource. Everyone should then plant a tree.
Extension Activities:
1. Teachers should
read The
Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. After discussing the story and
what the tree gave, have students make a giving tree name poem. They can use
desktop publishing to type and print poems, these poems can be made into a
Giving Tree Poem Book.
