Captain Invincible and the Space Shapes 

Part 2

Objective: Students will identify and explore geometric solids and be able to identify faces, edges and corners.   

Materials: Captain Invincible and the Space Shapes by Stuart J. Murphy, solid figures, marshmallows, toothpicks. Solids activity,  and computer with Microsoft Word.   

Book Overview:  A boy and his dog are bound for space.  They encounter problems that are only deflected by using the spaceship buttons such as:  pyramid, cone, cylinder, etc.  At the end we discover the boy has a vivid imagination and is actually in his room.  He plans his next adventure and Captain Stupendous on a pirate ship.  

Introduction: Review story from previous day.  Review solid figures with students.  Introduce face, edge and corner.  Have students work in cooperative groups to make solid figures using toothpicks and marshmallows.  They should make at least three different solids from the list below.

Let students have a treat of marshmallows at the end.  

Web Activities: Students will make a spaceship in Microsoft Word using assorted figures.  They can search for graphics on the Internet or use the program clipart.  Students can visit Geometry Graphics. 

Assessment:
The students will complete Polygon and Shapes activities for assessment.  Students can also answer the geometry question of the week at Math Forum. 

Home Learning:
Using a magazine, newspapers, etc., students will complete a solid shapes hunt.  They will cut out pictures, glue on a sheet and identify the solid.
