Captain Invincible and the Space Shapes 

 

Objective:  Students will identify and explore geometric solids. 

Materials: Captain Invincible and the Space Shapes by Stuart J. Murphy and computer with Internet connection.  

Book Overview:  A boy and his dog are bound for space.  They encounter problems that are only deflected by using the spaceship buttons such as:  pyramid, cone, cylinder, etc.  At the end of the adventure we discover the boy has a vivid imagination and is actually in his room.  He decides his next adventure with Captain Stupendous will be on a pirate ship.  

Introduction:  The teacher begins by reading Captain Invincible and the Space ShapesStudents are introduced to solid shapes.  Teacher discusses with students where in real life these shapes are seen.  

Web Activities:   Students will visit Geometry web site.  Identify types of triangles by angles.  Then go to games, puzzles and riddles. Then take the online quiz. This quiz will be printed out and used for assessment.  Students can also learn about space figures at Geometry/SpaceFigures; there is also an online quiz that can be used for assessment.

Home Learning:
Students will list 10 objects in real life that are examples of solid shapes.
