Pigs Will Be Pigs
Objective: Students become familiar with adding money.
Materials: Pigs Will Be Pigs by Amy Axelrod, computer with Internet connection, Pigs Will Be Pigs mat, play money, and Hungry Pigs activity.
Book Overview:
When the Pig family gets hungry and the refrigerator is bare, there's nothing
left to do but go on a money hunt. All of them begin looking all over the
house and after totaling their findings, they go out for Mexican.
Introduction:
Talk to students about what they did last time they were hungry and there
was nothing to eat. Introduce story of pigs that had the same
problem. Read the story. DO NOT TELL STUDENTS TOTAL AMOUNT THAT
PIGS FOUND. After listening for enjoyment, instruct students to work as
groups during second reading. This time, teacher pauses every time
some money is found. Let students use play money at their table to place
on Pigs Will Be Pigs mat. Review the use of decimal and dollar
sign. Give students time to add money at cooperative groups. Each group
will present their findings. Give prizes to those tables that got the
amount correct. Stress the importance of adding money correctly, lining up
the decimals, etc.

Assessment:
The Hungry Pigs activity will be used for assessment.
