Other Dinosaur Egg-citing Activities
Have students prepare flashcards about dinosaurs. On one side of the card, they glue a picture of a dinosaur which they can print from the Internet and on the other side of the card, information about the dinosaur. Using the flashcards students can practice classifying dinosaurs as plant-eaters/meat-eaters, bi-peds/quadrupeds, horned or not, land dwellers/water dwellers, etc.
Read some dinosaur books to determine how tall dinosaurs were. Allow students to measure each other to determine how they would compare to a dinosaur. Have students go to an open area such as a hallway, Physical Education field, corridor, etc. and mark off how long an actual dinosaur would have been it it was in the school.
Students can write a creative story about a dinosaur they find and what happens when they bring it to school.
Dinosaurs have been sighted in your city for the first time! Have students pretend they are a newspaper reporter assigned to write the story. Divide the students up into groups. One of the students should be the reporter and the other the dinosaurs. The reporter should find out why they have come to your city, how long they plant to stay, and what they want to do there. Students can use any word publisher to create a newspaper.
Students can have an archaeological "dig" by burying different items in a sand box. Have students use different tools to dig out fossils.
Have students draw a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast characteristics of two different dinosaurs of their choice.
Read What Happened To Patrick's Dinosaurs? After reading story, discuss with students how paleontologists are not sure what happened to all dinosaurs. Paleontologists know that like our reptiles, the dinosaurs' temperature went up and down with the air temperature. Some scientists think that the earth got too cool for dinosaurs. Maybe an asteroid crashed on the earth and caused too much dust for the sun's rays to come through. Other paleontologists think that the dinosaurs became extinct because there wasn't enough food for them to eat. No one knows for sure what happened. Have students tell what they think happened to all the dinosaurs that made them extinct. Make a class book "If The Dinosaurs Came Back..."
