Deserts Of  The World

Background Information

Two great belts of desert climate encircle the world on either side of the equator.  Deserts also form in regions sheltered from rain by high mountains.  The largest desert in the world is the Sahara in North Africa, covering an area of 3.5 million square miles.  Some cold deserts lie in the hearts of continents where the winds are dry.

Most people believe that a desert is a waterless, very hot, windy place with very little signs of life.  Some deserts are like that but others are very different.  Some deserts have no rain at all and others rain about ten times a year.  Some deserts are covered in bushes others with cactus.  Some deserts are covered with tall towers of strangely shaped rocks and others are covered with salty lakes.
