Ancient Egypt: Unearthing the Past

How It Works:  Ancient Egypt: Unearthing the Past is a thematic unit that explores the mysteries and wonders of Ancient Egypt. Students will take a journey back to ancient times and travel the River Nile to excavate the many contributions this civilization has made to the world. Using new technologies, students will research and create multimedia presentations to recreate the Land of the Pharaohs. This unit incorporates hands-on and project-based lessons to enhance student learning and critical thinking skills. Step back to the past… The Mummy awaits you.

Students:  This project is designed for 6th grade geography students who are a part of a technology club and are well verse in new technologies.

Overall:  The intent of this project is to transcend the barriers of classroom walls and step back to ancient times to a world filled with mystery, adventure, and wonders through the use of new technologies. In addition, students gain a sense of appreciation for the wonders that ancient civilizations created that still exist today. This project integrates multimedia to both captivate and enhance the learning of students. Students are engaged in a variety of tasks that are collaborating, motivating, and meaningful.

About the Teacher:  Morris Gil is in his 9th year in Miami Dade County Public Schools. He is the Technology Resource Teacher at Fienberg Fisher Elementary. He is responsible for all technology training and management of school network. He has been a Middle School Social Studies Teacher and Team Leader. He has work in the private sector as a Training Specialist in Educational Technology. He holds a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership/School Administration. He was Program Coordinator for the Citibank FamilyTech program, and currently is a site coordinator for this program which provides computer training and computers to students, teachers, and parents.
