Making Big Cats' Web Pages

Grade Level: First

Time Required: 30-40 minutes

Objective: Students understand that scientists and technologists use a variety of tools to obtain information in more detail and to make work easier.

Skills: Classifying and categorizing

 

Overview:
The students will make their own web pages using Web Workshop software.

Materials required:
A computer with Internet connection and Web Workshop CD-ROM (or similar web authoring software program)

Vocabulary:
a. mouse    b.  CD-ROM drive   c.  keyboard    d. monitor

Procedures:
This lesson is structured in the style of Bloom's Taxonomy.  It is meant to integrate higher level thinking skills into this unit.  The activities listed below are set up to be completed within a week. 

Activities:

Knowledge- The teacher will explain how to use the web authoring software. The students will work in pairs of two as they practice using this software. 

Comprehension- The students will make a basic outline showing how they will design their web pages.

 

Application:

Using Web Workshop the students will draw a picture and write basic telling sentences about what they learned about big cats.

 

Analysis-

The students will make corrections (with the teachers assistance) to their web pages before they are saved.

 

 

Synthesis- The students will share their web pages with the others students.  Make a class web site to show off the students work and creativity; post on school's web site or other free site, such as Yahoo's Geocities.

Technology Connection- 


Web Workshop software or similar web authoring software

 

Yahoo's Geocities- free site that hosts web sites

 

Rubistar Rubrics for Teachers- create an online rubric

 



Extension:
The students will print a copy of their web pages and combine them into a big book for the classroom library center.  Allow the students to take turns checking out their big book to share with family members at home.


Evaluation:
The students will view their web pages with the class and teacher can evaluate the web pages using a Rubistar Web Page Rubric.
