A Web of Workers

Grade Level: Kindergarten/First Grade

Grouping: Whole Class

National Educational Technology Standard:   Create developmentally appropriate multimedia resources.

Life Skills:  Learning to use technology productivity tools and critical thinking

Introduction:

In this lesson activity the students will use the developmentally appropriate software, Kidspiration to create different cluster diagrams of community helpers and those whose jobs depend of theirs.

 Materials:

A chalkboard or chart, a computer with Internet access and the software Kidspiration

 Procedure:

1.                  Explain to the students that for every worker there are other workers whose jobs depend upon theirs.  Begin by using a school employee other than yourself.  Make a basic circular cluster with extending lines on the chalkboard. Then print the word school bus driver in the center.  Add to the web by including other workers whose services are necessary to the bus driver’s work.  For example, the mechanic who makes the bus run correctly, the person who plans the bus routes and the children who ride the bus, etc.

         2.                  Ask the students to think of other community helpers whose jobs are related to each other.  Add their suggestions to a new web.

         3.                  Allow the students to make their own simple pictures clusters/diagrams using the software Kidspiration.

4.         Have students use this search engine to find more information about community helpers and jobs: Kids Click.

5.        Have students design the perfect job using a Job Planning Sheet. Students can use desktop publishing to design their personal business card. Create a logo or add clip art.

6.         Have students visit this site to plan their own community: Kids and Community.

7.        Teachers can use this site to locate information about community helpers and volunteering, click on Parents: Tenet Web.

 Home Learning:

Parents will discuss their job description with their children. Then they will assist them in making a simple cluster/ diagram showing other community helpers whose jobs depend upon their jobs.

 Evaluation:

The students will share their Kidspiration diagrams with the other students in the class.

 Extension:

The students can use the user friendly  Kidspiration software to make other diagrams dealing with community helpers. Students can learn more about graphic organizers and diagrams at Graphic Organizers to Print.

 Example:

A.                 The students can make cluster of the types of clothing that different community helpers wear.

B.                 The students can make clusters of the tools that community helpers use.

C.                 The students can cluster the different places where community helpers work.

D.                The students can make clusters of the different goods and  services that different community workers provide.

Field Trip:

If there is a job fair in your city, take the students on a field trip to learn about different jobs first hand.
