Tools of Trade

 

 

Grade Level: Kindergarten/First

Grouping: Whole Class

 

National Education Technology Standard: Use technology resources (e.g. puzzles, logical thinking programs, writing tools, digital cameras, drawing tools) for problem solving, communication, and illustration of thoughts, ideas, and stories.

Life Skills: Critical thinking, and working cooperatively and collaboratively with peers, family members and the community

 

Introduction:

 

Many Community Helpers use special tools to assist them with their jobs.  In this lesson the students will explore the uses of tools of trade and how they help the people who live and work in our community produce goods and services.

 

Materials:

 

Chart paper, makers, regular paper, pencil, and crayons

Software: Busy Town and, Barney On Location Around Town and KidPix

 

Procedure:

 

1.   The students will bring in a “tools of the trade” of one or both of their parents.  They will then explain the tool(s) that they have brought in, telling how it is connected to their parent's work. (Example: wrench, computer paper, measuring spoon, menu)

 

  1. Using KidPix or some other type of painting and drawing software, each student will  contribute a computer generated page that has a picture and a describing sentence of the tool that they brought in to school.  When all of the students have completed their pages, use their contribution to make a “Tools of Trade” picture dictionary to be used as a reference resource for the students in your classroom.  Make sure that all illustrations and terminology are correct.

 

3.   Allow the students to interact with the software “Busy Town andBarney On Location All Around TownHave them to explore the different places and tools that their neighbors use to perform their jobs.

 

4.   Have students brainstorm their dream jobs and give them time to research them at the following sites: Career Information, Think Quest Career Trail, and Career Builder .

 

Home Learning:

 

The students will make a mobile of facts about the Community Helper of his/her choice and their tools of trade.

 

Evaluation:

 

The students’ contributions to the “Tools of Trade” picture dictionary can be used for assessment.

 

Extension:

 

After students have completed their dream job activity, post job information. Have students create a graph of the types of dream jobs students want to have. Students can create an online graph at Graphing.

 

Field Trip:

 

Allow the students to take a virtual field trip observing a energy utility worker and his tools of trade at work: Community Club-Utility Worker
