Introduction:

To establish a stronger school-community link, many schools host a yearly “Career Day” in which all parents are invited to participate.  This event is a perfect opportunity for students to understand how neighbors meet the needs of each other in a community.

Materials:

A computer with printer and a digital camera

Procedure:

1.      Using a digital camera the students take turns (with supervision) taking pictures of parent presenters.

2.      When the presentations are over, download the pictures on to a computer and allow the students to view their photos as a show-and-tell slide show presentation. The pictures can be shown on a large screen monitor or a TV connected to a computer.

3.   Using Web Workshop the students can draw a picture and write sentences illustrating and explaining what career choice they might want to pursue when the grow up. Students can post their work at: Stories From the Web.

4.   Students can also complete a Personal History Worksheet to tell their classmates all about themselves.

5.    Students can visit this site for vocabulary help: Vocabulary.com

6.    Student can maintain an electronic journal to record information and attach pictures, sounds and movies. See: eJournal

Home Learning:

Discuss with your parents the events of the day.  Tell them about the community helpers that you learned about. Also tell them about what goods and they provide for our community.

Evaluation:

The students will share information of what they have learned during Career Day.  The students can also write thank you notes using Print Shop Deluxe or similar software to the students’ parents who participated in the above event.

Extension:

Have students write a draft of a memorable moment using a story-starter such as, "I had such a good time when I..." or "I couldn't believe the time I..." When edited, use desktop publishing to rewrite moment, use spell check and publish into a class Memorable Moments Book.
