Introduction:

The students will work as together to create a miniature simulation of a department store in your classroom.  They also use plastic money to buy the goods that they need. Students will also participate in a simulated shopping trip in the World Wide Web and produce a Shopping Expense Review of purchases made.

Materials:

Play money, a children’s cash register, empty food boxes and containers such as: cereal boxes, soda bottles, plastic containers and so on, computer with Internet access, desktop publishing

Procedure:

1.                  Have the students to identify local market and merchandise stores in your community.  As a whole class group, discuss the kinds of items that can be purchased at theses establishments. Have students visit these online stores: Target, Publix, Macys and  Sears

2.                  Tell the students that they are going to make a classroom store.  Help them to make a list of items that they could sell in this store.

3.                  Send home a letter to parents informing them of this project.  Have them to send in food and non-perishable containers and boxes that can be displayed and sold in your classroom store.

4.                  The students will earn money to spend in their store by performing selected jobs in their classroom, such as: keeping their work area clean, passing out papers, watering the classroom plants, completing their work assignment and so on.  The distribution of monies to be spent in your store can be done daily or weekly depending upon the length of time that you want this project to cover.

5.        Students will next participate in "Shopping on the Internet" math activity. Review with students place value in ones, tens, hundreds and thousands places.

6.        Work with students on word problems using addition and subtraction, older grades use multiplication and division. For extra practice, have students type their word problems and answers in a computer-generated daily math journal.

7.         Tell students they will have $_______ (fill in amount) to shop with on various Internet web sites.

8.         Students must follow this criteria:

9.        Book mark shopping web sites, such as Amazon.com, Yahoo! Shopping, and Net Grocer

10.       Give students adequate time to shop; students will complete a Shopping Expense Review.

Home Learning:

The students will choose a local store in their community and make a shoebox diorama of it.

Evaluation:

The students will assemble their shoebox dioramas and share them as part of a classroom display.

Extension:

  1. Take the students on a field to a local department or market store. Example: Wal-Mart, A&P, Winn Dixie, Target, or Publix.   Contact the store manager in advance and arrange for a tour.
  2. Allow the students to draw pictures and write about their experience on the trip.
  3. Using word processing, have the students write “Thank you” letter to the managers and workers for allowing you to visit. They can design their letterhead and stationary using clip art, word art, and paint/draw applications.
