Lesson Plan- "diamonte" Writing

Objectives:

Students will be able to:

*  Identify vocabulary.

*  Write their own acrostic and diamonte poem.

*  Write  a story in a narrative form.

Materials:

*  Word processing program

Activities:

1. Review vocabulary.

2. Read poems and stories produced by other children and discuss with students.

3. Discuss what an acrostic and a diamonte poem is and show an example of each one.

4. Demonstrate to students how to make a capital letter )hold the shift key down when striking key), how to move down a line (hit the "enter key)," and how the center words (highlight and click center align). You can also explain how to make the first letter larger and bold (highlight letter, click on size- make larger, and click the "B."

Example:

       Acrostic Poem

Bats are harmless creatures.

A bat is the only mammal that can fly.

They hang upside down to sleep.

Some bats hibernate while others migrate to warmer climates.

       Diamonte Poem (comparing a bat to another)

bat

furry, small

sleeping, eating, hunting

dark, moon, sun, sky

flying, soaring, eating

feather, beak

bird

4. Students will also be able to go on-line to read poems and stories produced by other children.

5. Students will type their own acrostic and diamonte poem on the computer and pick one to share with the class. They can write a diamonte poem online at ABC Teach. Teachers can access acrostic poems at Acrostics.   

6. Discuss what they need in a narrative story and give them examples. (1. move through a logical sequence of events or 2. describe the setting, characters, objects and events in details)

7. Students will look at a Fruit bat, Black Flying Fox or a Greyheaded Flying Fox and they must choose one to write about.

8. They will describe in narrative form the fruit bat or flying fox eating nectar.

Evaluation:

*  Completed acrostic and diamonte poem.

*  Completed narrative story.

Home Learning:

*  Students will go online to Stellaluna and print out the worksheet and complete it.
