Lesson Plan - Introduction to Bats


Objectives:

Students will be able to:

*  Name the specific bat when given a description of the bat.

*  Explain why bats are mammals.

*  State what facts they know about bats.

*  Write three things they know and three things they want to know about bats.

*  Complete a post-test with 90 % accuracy.

Materials:

*  Books: BATS by Gail Gibbons and The Truth About Bats by Alice Rice

*  K-W-L Chart

*  Chart paper to make their list of bats

*  Markers 

Activities:

1. Ask class how many of them are familiar with bats.

2. Read stories: BATS and The Truth About Bats  and discuss it with the students.

3. Students will work in cooperative groups and discuss/brainstorm all the facts that they know about bats and make a list of at least eight facts on a chart paper.

4. Students will share their list with the class and write all of the facts given about bats on the chalkboard.

5. Students will be given a ten question Pre-Test on bats *students will take same test as a Post-Test at the end of the unit..

6. Teacher will conduct a lesson on the characteristics of bats, focusing on the Hoary bat, Big Brown bat, Red bat, Silver Hair bat, and the Indiana bat.

7. Students can look online for the Notes on bats.               

8. Students will pick three characteristics of bats they like most and write them in their notes.

9. Students will do their own K-W-L chart (write three things they know and three things they want to know).

10. Students will take a ten question Post-Test quiz on bats.

Evaluation:

*  Students will complete their own K-W-L chart.

*  Students will complete post-test quiz on bats.

Home Learning:

*  Students will take a Quiz online for fun and look around the rest of the web site to learn more information about bats.
