Lesson Plan - Facts & Myths/Recalling Details

Objectives:

Students will be able to:

*  Identify vocabulary.

*  Tell the difference between a fact and a myth using the list complied during brainstorm session.

*  Recall details from the story.

Materials:

*  Books: Stellaluna by Janell Cannon and Shadows of the Night  by Barbara Bash.

*  Bat pattern

*  Glue

*  Scissors

*  Poster

*  White and black construction paper

Activities:

1. Review vocabulary.

2. Discuss the differences between a fact and a myth.

3.  Ask class to brainstorm all of the facts and myths that they know about bats and write down all of their information given about bats on the chalkboard.

  example:

 FACT

* Bats hang upside down when resting.

* Bats are the only mammals that can fly.

 MYTH

* Bats get stuck in your hair.

* Bats are dirty

* Bats are blind.

4. Students will write three facts and three myths about bats and write the information on the bat pattern and share them with the class.

5. Students will go online to Bat Facts, Bats- Did You Know? or Bat Myths to help them come up with some more facts and myths about bats.

6. After the students have shared their bat facts they found in the previous activity; invite the new "bat experts" to check out one of these fun Bat Quizzes online. 

7. Discuss the importance of recalling details from the story.

8. Students will work in cooperative groups and recall details of the story by making a poster of "Mother Bat Lost Her Baby, Stellaluna" with the following information:

* Last Seen: 

* Reason For Disappearance:

8. Students will share their poster on recalling details with the class.

Evaluation:

*  Students will state three facts and three myths about bats.

*  Oral presentation on recalling details (poster).

Home Learning:

*  Students will go on-line to take a bat quiz.

*  Students will go on-line to complete a crossword puzzle on bats (print out the worksheet and complete it).
