Lesson Plan - Compare & Contrast/Story Events



Objective:

Students will able to:

*  Identify vocabulary.

*  Identify story elements (Title, Author, Setting, Characters, Problem, Events one, two and three and Solution) by using a story map.

*  Tell the differences and similarities between a bat and a bird (compare & contrast).

Materials:

*  Books: Stellaluna by Janell Cannon and  The Magic School Bus Going Batty by Nancy E. Krulik

*  Venn Diagram

*  Story Map

Activities:

1. Have students re-read Stellaluna at their desk silently.

2. Read story: The Magic School Bus Going Batty:A Book About Bats and discuss it with the students.

3. Review vocabulary.

4. Students will go on-line to Puzzle Maker  to create a word search puzzle using the vocabulary words (small groups).

5. Students will create a story map:

               Setting:

                Characters:

                Problem:

                Events:
               one
               two
               three

                Solution:

6. Demonstrate a Venn Diagram (compare & contrast) to the class and students can go on-line to Venn Diagram to look at the graphic organizer that will help the children see more clearly the similarities and the differences between a bat and a bird.

7. Students will make their own Venn Diagram using the facts highlighted in the book with the following headings:  Fruit bats are different from birds because they..., Fruit bats and birds are alike because they..., and Birds are different from fruit bats because they...

8. Students can go online to Bat Facts to find other bat facts and compare them with what is known about birds.

9.  Students will add to the Venn Diagram the new similarities and differences that they found.

10. Once the students have finished their work, invite them to go on-line to complete a Crossword Bat Puzzle.

Evaluation:

*  Completed Story Map.

*  Completed Venn Diagrams.

Home Learning:

*  Students will go on-line to Stellaluna and print out the worksheet and complete it.
