Lesson Plan - Cause & Effect/Sequencing

Objectives:

Students will be able to:

*  Identify vocabulary words and make a prediction of the story.

*  Put the story in sequential order.

*  Identify the cause (Why Did It Happen?) to the effect (What Happened?).

Materials:

*  Book: Stella Luna by Janell Cannon

*  Chart paper

*  Markers

Activities:

1.  Introduce vocabulary (pups, scent, ripe, shriek, dodge, clutch, colonies, mango, mammal, curious, nocturnal, echolocation, myth, hibernate, migrate, nectar and bat).

2. Students will go online to Word Central to find synonyms and antonyms for their vocabulary words. 

3. Students will preview and make a prediction about the story.

4. Read story Stellaluna and ask  comprehension questions (example: Where did the mother bat and her baby live? How did the mother bat search for food? Why did Mama Bird get upset with Stellaluna? and What did Stellaluna learn about bats flying at night?)

5. Discuss the events in the story and the students will put them in sequential order.

6. Discuss cause and effect.

7. Students will work in cooperative groups and identify the cause to the following effects: Stellaluna was knocked loose from Mother Bat; Stellaluna fell headfirst into the bird's nest; Mama Bird told the baby birds to get back into the nest, and Pip, Flitter and Flap flew home without Stellaluna.

8. Students will share their chart on cause and effect with the class.

9. Once the students have finished their work, you may want to printout a Bat Word Search Puzzle for them to complete.

Evaluation:

*  The students will put the events of the story in sequential order.

*  Students will make an oral presentation on cause and effect.

Home Learning:

*  Students will go online to Discovery Kids (click on Puzzlemaker) to create a crossword puzzle with their vocabulary words (save to a disk and bring to school to print)

*  Students will use word processor to type their vocabulary words and use the paint or draw application to draw a picture of a bat.
