Online Scavenger Hunt

Component: Language Arts

Objectives: 

• Sets purpose for reading, by relating new information to prior knowledge

• Writes notes, comments, and observations that reflect comprehension of content and      
  experiences from a variety of media

• Uses electronic technology, including word-processing software and electronic      
  encyclopedias, to create, revise, retrieve, and verify information

• Determines main concept and supporting details in a non-print media message

Materials: Computer with online capabilities, disks, paper

Procedure: 1) Working in small groups, students will search online for answers to
                      the questions below.

                 2) Save answers on disks.

                 3) Cite websites with URLs. (example: Yahooligans )

                                              Sample  Questions with Correlating Web Site

                             A) When was chocolate first discovered? (In the New World during the times of  
                                 Columbus)
                                 Candy USA- have students scroll down page to read about the history of         
                                 chocolate

                             B) Look for sites about little people found around the world,
                                 such as leprechauns.
                                 Holidays- St. Patrick's Day- scroll down to read about leprechauns

                             C) Take a cyber tour of the Hershey's Factory. 
                                 Where is it located? (Hershey, Pennsylvania)

                                 What are the main ingredients in chocolate? (The main ingredients in     
                                 chocolate are the chocolate liquor, cocoa butter, sugar and milk)

                                 How are most chocolate bars made? (Most chocolate bars are made by 
                                 pouring the liquid chocolate paste into moulds)

                             D) Find how to create a chocolate crossword puzzle online. 
                                  School Discovery- click on create a puzzle online

                             E) Search for websites relating to Roald Dahl.

                             F) Download a recipe containing chocolate.
                                 Hershey's Kitchen- click on Recipes

                            G) Students will organize information and create a Summary of Information 
                                discovered

Evaluation: Students will be evaluated using a Scavenger Hunt Rubric.

Homework: Using the summary, each student will write three higher level questions
                   (analysis, synthesis and evaluation) and answer them in essay style 
                   responses. 

Extension Activities: 

• Make a chart of all websites found relating to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

• After finding how to make a crossword puzzle, make one using words from the story.

• Write commercials to advertise a candy bar.
