LESSON 2: PASS THE PEACE PIPE
Component: Historical awareness
Objectives: To understand the impact of Native Americans on the
settlers
To understand literature of and about the time period being studied
To locate specific information on a timeline
Materials: computer; Internet access; social studies textbook
Procedures:
The class will read the chapters in the Social Studies textbook on the Native Americans to establish a background.
They will then search online for sites containing the early history of
smoking
in the U. S. (This can be adapted to other countries.)
They will read their findings and compile the information into an essay
citing
their sources.
Several of the essays will be added to the web page (See lesson on web page.)
Students can make an online timeline at Timeline Basics and Timeline Toolkit
Evaluation: Continue to edit the essay by revising it into a newspaper style article, writing it in the top to bottom mode, listing the most important information first.
Extension Activities:
Make a timeline regarding information on smoking in the U.S.
Search online for additional web sites relating to the history of tobacco, such as Science, Tobacco and You
Compare information found online with that of a CD encyclopedia, such
as World Book, listing any differences. Visit an online encyclopedia
at The Smithsonian
Make a brochure using desktop publishing, include historical
information found.
